The route

Nearly every guided ascent follows the Hörnli Ridge, the Swiss northeast ridge. Day one is a two-hour walk from the Schwarzsee lift to the Hörnli Hut at 3,260 m. Summit day leaves before dawn: about four hours of sustained rock and mixed climbing to the top, past the Solvay emergency hut and up the fixed ropes of the upper ridge, then four hours down.

Guides climb the Matterhorn one to one, moving fast and short-roped, so fitness and speed on rock in crampons matter as much as technique. From Italy, the Lion Ridge climbs from Breuil-Cervinia via the Carrel hut, and is harder.

When to go

The Hörnli Ridge is usually in condition from mid-July to mid-September, once the ridge has cleared of snow. Fresh snow or ice on the rock can close it at any time, and guides will move the day or turn back rather than climb it out of condition.

Hut booking and preparation

No permit is needed, and no law makes you hire a guide, but the Hörnli Hut must be booked: online booking opens on 1 April, and a dorm bed with half board costs CHF 150. The Carrel hut on the Italian side is booked through the Società Guide del Cervino.

Guides will want to see that you are ready. Expect to climb with them first on a preparation tour such as the Riffelhorn, the Breithorn traverse or Pollux, and to be asked which 4,000 m peaks you have already climbed.

What it costs

For 2026 and 2027, guide-only fees for the two-day climb start at about €1,700. Packages including the hut, lifts and train run from about €2,700 for the two-day climb to €3,600 for five days with preparation climbs. On top of a guide-only fee you pay the guide's hut night and lift tickets as well as your own. Gear rental in Zermatt runs CHF 50 to 70.
