Martin Chester
BMG Full Guide
Bio: Martin is an experienced and enthusiastic freelance Guide with a special passion for ski mountaineering. After twenty years at Plas y Brenin (Sport England's National Mountain Centre) he has the highest experience of "training the trainer" and has continued this work as the Coaching Development Officer of Mountain Training UK and consultant/advisor to the outdoor sector. "For me, it is all about helping great people achieve great things in the great outdoors. I get my professional kicks from helping others fulfil their potential - from those first tentative steps to high level coaching. I also train and assess the full spectrum of UK qualifications, have managed the development of National Centre Instructors, and deliver on BMG training courses". Martin is also a fully qualified Mountaineering Instructor, and Level 5 Kayak Coach, with a 'thing about coaching'. He co-authored the "Getting Active Outdoors" report for Sport England and the OIA, which informed the Government Sport Strategy. He regularly delivers keynotes and speaks at conferences on participation in the outdoors. TV, film and media experience includes the role of 'climbing expert' as on screen coach and mentor for "Hidden Talent" on Channel 4; the concept, writing and production of the BMC "Rock Climbing Essentials" and "Off Piste Essentials" educational DVDs for climbers, ski tourers and ski mountaineers; regular appearances in CountryFile and CountryTracks for BBC TV; and writing the back-country section for Fall-line Skiing magazine.
