Full name is Matthew Hitchcock. 33 years old. People call me Matty. Grew up on water, so I’ve been swimming, waterskiing, surfing, cliff jumping, etc. all my life. Been a carpenter for 15 years. Built houses and did renovations for 8+ years. Got recruited to build boats for John Bayliss (Bayliss Boatworks) for 3.5 years. Since then, I’ve been on my own working for my community. Living on a small island most your life, you pretty much get to know everyone. So its nice to work for friends and families that need my assistance. Climbing background: I’d always climbed the cliffs we’d jump off as kids, but I never got into climbing. Not till I read an article that said someone free soloed El Cap... That got my attention. Since then, its been an everyday part of life. I built a boulder wall in my garage and invited friends to come over and climb on it. I didn’t know shit about climbing, nor did I have any idea what I was doing. Wasn’t until I met some people who grew up in the mountains and use to climb outside a lot. They taught me how to climb and took me on my first trips. Since then, Ive been climbing nearly everyday. I run an unofficial club called, The Outer Banks Climbing Club, where I open my garage up Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6pm - 9pm, to anyone who wants to come by and climb. Absolutely free, and everyone is welcomed! Stoked to receive my SPI certification from Karsten. He’s a great mentor and teacher. Tough son of a bitch haha
